Open Compounding Returns Calculator

  1. Set the starting balance and period

Enter Starting capital, Years and Extra months. These define the beginning balance and the projection length.

  2. Enter monthly return assumptions

Set Average monthly return and Monthly return volatility. Review Max losing month (%) and Max winning month (%) because these limits constrain the generated returns. They do not cap what can happen in a real account.

  3. Include contributions or withdrawals

Use Monthly contribution / withdrawal for money added or removed each month. A negative value represents a withdrawal. In this model the cash flow is applied after the monthly return.

  4. Choose the compounding model

Select Fully compounded to apply returns to the current balance, or inspect the starting-capital models for comparison. Set Simulation paths, then choose Recalculate.

  5. Compare the range of outcomes

Read the smooth ending balance, median, p10 and p90 ending balances, and p95 maximum drawdown. Review the month-by-month table. Use Generate new path to see another possible return sequence.

Understanding percentiles

The median is the middle simulated outcome. The p10 and p90 values mark the 10th and 90th percentiles of the modelled ending balances; they are not promised minimum or maximum balances. The smooth path assumes steady returns and hides the sequence of losing months.
